Miconazole-loaded hydrogels with superior fungicidal and bactericidal activity

Researchers at KU Leuven developed a new glycyrrhizin-based hydrogel that contains 2% miconazole for the topical treatment of fungal and bacterial (vaginal) infections. This hydrogel shows better fungicidal properties as compared to Gyno Daktarin, and is also bactericidal.

The technology has been conceptualized by Dr. Karin Thevissen and Dr. Thijs Vackier, affiliated with the research groups of Prof. Bruno Cammue and Prof. Hans Steenackers, respectively, Centre for Microbial and Plant Genetics (CMPG, KU Leuven), in collaboration with Prof. Wim Thielemans of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering, KULAK Kortrijk Campus.

They are currently looking to collaborate with interested pharma partners to further develop the miconazole-based hydrogel formulation.
